 Shield Events

Romsey Golf Club

Men’s Club Champion

This three week event traditionally takes place on the first three Saturdays of September.

A Grade; A stroke event.  The winner is the player with the lowest gross score over the three rounds.  (A Grade is usually players with handicaps of 9 or less)  The winner of this event is, usually, the Club Champion.

B Grade; A stroke event.  The winner is the B Grade player with the lowest gross score over the three rounds. (B Grade is usually players with handicaps of between 10 and 19)

C Grade; A stroke event.  The winner is the C Grade player with the lowest gross score over the three rounds. (C Grade is usually players with handicaps of 20 or greater)

 

Women's Club Champion

This three week event traditionally takes place during the first three weeks of August.

A Grade; A stroke event.  The winner is the player with the lowest gross score over the three rounds.  (A Grade is usually players with handicaps of 20 or less)  The winner of this event is the Club Champion.

B Grade; A stroke event.  The winner is the B Grade player with the lowest gross score over the three rounds. (B Grade is usually players with handicaps of between 21 and 30)

C Grade; A stroke event.  The winner is the C Grade player with the lowest gross score over the three rounds. (C Grade is usually players with handicaps of 31 or greater).


Club Championship Related Shields

The Peter Scanlon Shield

First awarded in 2007, this shield honours life member, Peter Scanlon, It commemorates his amazing 2007 performance; competing in 50 consecutive annual Club Championships.  A handicap stroke event for veterans played as part of the annual Club Championships.  The shield is awarded to the lowest handicap score, over the three rounds, by a player aged 55 or above.

 

The Laurie Thompson  Shield

First awarded in 1997, this shield honours life member, Laurie Thompson, it is a handicap stroke event for juniors, it is played as part of the annual Club Championships and is awarded to the lowest handicap score, over the three rounds, by a player aged 18 or younger.


The John Jeffrey Shield

First awarded in 2003, this shield honours member, John Jeffrey,  it is a handicap stroke event which is part of the annual Club Championships. The shield is awarded to the player with the lowest handicap score over the three rounds. 




RGC Men's Shields

W. E. Tom 4BBB Knock-out

First awarded in 1965,  this shield is a pair’s handicap knock-out competition.  The qualifying round, stoke, stableford or par, is played in June immediatly after the Romsey Open.  The pairs with the top eight scores then move on to the next rounds where the competition reverts to a handicap match-play format.   The shield is generally concluded on consecutive Saturdays in June/July however Monthly Medal may push the final round back one week.  Other members will play stroke, stableford or par as the top eight pairs fight out the final rounds of this, our oldest shield.


Algie Mitchell Perpetual Trophy - Singles Knockout

First awarded in 1970, this event honours life member Algie Mitchell.  It is a handicap, singles knockout event and is played as part of the club's preparation for the annual pennant golf competition.  The qualifying round, which may be stroke, stableford or par, is played on the first Saturday of March.  The players with the top eight scores move on to the next rounds where the competition reverts to a handicap match-play format.   The shield is concluded on the following Saturdays in March.  Other members will play stroke, stableford or par as the top eight players fight out the final rounds of this, our second oldest shield.


The John Laing Shield

First awarded in 1995, this shield honours life member, John Laing. it is a handicap matchplay, knock-out event.  The competition begins with a qualifying round of stableford, stroke or par on the first Saturday of November.  The players with the top eight scores move on to the next rounds where the competition reverts to a handicap match-play format.   The shield is concluded on the following Saturdays in November.  Other members will play stroke, stableford or par as the top eight players fight out the final rounds of this shield.



RGC Shared Shield

Helene & Ken Newnham Shield - Medal of Medalists

First awarded in 1990, this shield honours life members Helene & Ken Newnham, it is an annual handicap stroke event and is played (with a maximum field of 12), during the last week of October. It is part of the August Monthly Medal.  Only those players, men and women, who have won a Monthly Medal between October of the previous year and September of current year are eligible to compete in this event.


Relative Pairs

First awarded in 2002, this shield is a 4BBB Stableford event played on the Saturday before the Romsey Open.  Pairs include; partner-partner, brother-sister, father/mother-child, uncle/aunt-nephew/niece etc.  To be eligible to win this shield at least one member of the pair must hold a current GolfVic handicap.


RGC Women's Shields

The Rose Scanlon Perpetual Shield.

First awarded in 1984, this shield honours life member Rose Scanlon.  The shield is an Annual Aggregrate Points award.  Points are allocated after every women's competition; three (3) points for 1st, two (2) points for second and one (1) point for third.



The Captains' & President's Award
First awarded in 2013, this shield is for conspicious service to the club.  The current president and captains are not eligable to win this shield and it cannot be won more than twice by any individual.  

 Juniors' Shields
The Gary Watts Shield

First awarded in 2007, this 18 hole event honours long term member Gary Watts,  recognising his work, over many years, with the club's junior golfers.  It is an U15, U18 and U21 Boys and U21 Girls stroke event.  It is awarded to the boy and girl with the lowest stroke scores.  This was a stand alone event (following the Romsey Open format) for a number of years, however it is currently played as part of the Macedon Ranges Junior Golf Tournament.  The MRJGT was traditionally held over Labour Day weekend but with LGC withdrawing from the event in 2016 it has moved to the 2nd weekend of August.    

 

The Macedon Ranges Junior Golf Tournament

First awarded in 2010, this 54 hole event, played over the Labour Day weekend, includes rounds at three of the Romsey, Woodend, Mt Macedon and Lancefield Golf Courses,   It is an U15, U18 and U21 Boys and U21 Girls stroke event.  The two players (boys and girls) with the best stroke scores, over the three rounds, win the title of Macedon Ranges Junior Champion.  (There are also daily stroke & handicap  awards, for each age-group, on each of the days of the tournament).  The MRJGT was traditionally held over Labour Day weekend but with LGC withdrawing from the event in 2016 it has moved to the 2nd weekend of August. 


The Chris Gaunt Cup

First awarded in 2009, this 54 hole event is played as part of the MRJT; it honours long term RGC member and current golf professional, Chris Gaunt.  It is a handicap stroke event awarded to the boy and girl with the lowest handicap score over the Macedon Ranges Junior Golf Tournament.  The MRJGT was traditionally held over Labour Day weekend but with LGC withdrawing from the event in 2016 it has moved to the 2nd weekend of August.
