Saturday July 1st – Qualifying Rd – 2017 W. E. Tom Shield

The qualifying round of the 2017 W. E. Tom Shield began on the coldest morning of the year so far.  There was heavy frost on many fairways and some greens and ice on a few puddles that were still in the shade.  While the cold had slightly reduced the field those who had accepted the challenge of the day took to the field with gusto and made sure they enjoyed every chilly second of the round.  Players got extra distance on one side of a  frozen fairway while on the other, sunnier side, the ball often stopped dead,  Again, arriving at a green 2nd or 3rd gave golfers a very good idea as to how to play the hole.  Thanks to the excellent work of Life Member, John Laing, the 16th, bird ravaged, green is now back in play.  Well done and Thanks John.  On a chilly afternoon the results were;

Winners; Shannon Wright/Jim Patton – 46 pts from John Freestone/Mick Nicholls Snr –  44 pts, Scott Williams/Mal Mottram – 41 pts & Anthony Freeman/Michael McCarten – 40 pts

NTPs; 15th – Mick Nicholls Snr & 16th – Jim Patton

The semi-finals of the W. E. Tom Shield will be;

  1. Jim Patton/Shannon Wright Vs Michael McCarten/Anthony Freeman

2. John Freestone/Mick Nicholls Snr Vs Scott Williams/Mal Mottram

Wednesday June 28th – Monthly Medal – Stroke & Putts

Another cool morning with a heavy dew across the whole course (helped if you were 2nd to a green), there was a little NW wind but it really did not effect play.  The fairways had good cover so everyone got a good lie but again everyone lost distance once the ball landed.  The  16th green (temporary green for the last few weeks) may well be back in play sooner than expected, thanks to the knowledge and hard work of Life Member John Laing.  On brisk morning where the cuppa after the round warmed the hands as much as the insides the results were;

Winner and June Medalist; Lorraine Robb – 109/35/74

Least Putts; Michael McCarten – 29

Saturday June 24th – June Monthly Medal – Stroke & Putts

Another wonderful winter’s day, cool but with clear skies and virtually no wind, the sun came out now and then making some holes much warmer.  The fairways had good cover and in general the greens putted very true but the cold air and the soft fairways stole distance from all players.  Those who were able to hit the green in regulation had the best of the afternoon.  It was great to welcome Mitchell Clement back from two years working the snow fields of Canada, his first shot in many months was good enough to pick up NTP on the par 3 1st.  On a beautiful winter’s afternoon the results were;

Winner & June Medalist; Andrew Clement – 80/10/70 from Anthony Freeman – 93/20/73, Peter Scanlon – 103/30/73 & Mitch Clement – 86/12/74

NTPs; 1st – Mitch Clement, 15th – Michael McCarten & 16th – Mal Mottram

Least Putts; AndrewLaing – 26

Thursday June 22nd – Shirley Deane Memorial 4BBB – Nagambie G. C.

On a fine winter’s day Wendy and Darlene set off for Nagambie to play in the Shirley Deane Memorial 4BBB.  It was an overcast but pleasantly windless day. The course was fairly dry with a surprising amount of run for this time of year . The greens were true with Wendy never having more than a two putt all day.

The winners on the day were a couple of young locals with an impressive score of 51 points.  Wendy and Darlene were pleased and surprised to be announced as the runners up with 47 points. Wendy topped off a very good day of golf by winning nearest the pin on one of the par threes.

Wednesday June 21st – Stableford

Players hit-off under cool, misty conditions.  Players had to take extra care to keep grips and gloves dry or pay the price of shifting during a stroke and the ball heading almost anywhere.  Again, the cold air and the soft fairways saw all drives and many approach shots well short of expected distances.  Highlights of the day were birdies to Jenny Hartley on the Par 3 1st and to Wendy Gosden on the Par 3 15th.  On a chilly morning the results were;

Winner; Darlene Baker – (22) – 33 pts from Kath Jekabsons (28) & Beryl Cole (24) – 32 pts

Men’s Winner; Michael McCarten (11) 31 pts

Saturday June 17th – Stableford

Another wonderful early winter’s day for the club’s stableford competition.  Players found plenty of dew on the fairways and greens and a steady southerly breeze so there was little run once the ball landed.   The sun soon broke through and the round was played in beautiful conditions.  Again, a number of players put together excellent front nines, even good 15 holes before the wheels fell off after an errant drive or a poorly played approach shot lobbed well over the back of the green.  Suddenly a 40+ score was dragged right back.  On a beautiful winter’s day the results were;

Winner; Michael McCarten (12) – 37 pts from Bob McLennan (13) & Rob Rea (18) 36 pts & Mal Mottram (11) 35 pts

NTPs; 15th Andrew Laing

Thursday June 15th – Avenel Salver

Romsey Golf Club was represented in the annual team’s event, the Avenel Salver, by Beryl Cole, Lorraine Robb and Darlene Baker.  The weather was perfect from start to finish with dappled to full sunlight and a gentle breeze.  There were preferred lies “Through The Green” largely due to bird damage but generally the course was in good condition.

All three RGC players adapted well to the the sand scrapes and generally enjoyed good golf.  Seymour won the day with a team total of 100 pts, Romsey came in 3rd with a  respectable 96 pts.  A highlight of the day was Lorraine winning C Grade with 34 pts.

Wednesday June 14th – 4th Rd Silver Spoon – Stroke & Putts

The field headed to the 1st tee in lovely sunshine with a strong breeze from the east, the breeze kept up for the round and made the back nine more than challenging.  It was good to welcome back Sharon Mathers who had recently competed in the GolfVic Par 3 competition in Kyabram, won, for the 4th time, by Kilmore’s Jessica Pickwick.  On another wonderful early winter’s morning the results were;

Winner; Darlene Baker – 97/22/75 C/B from Elaine Scanlon – 107/32/75 and Jenny Hartley – 109/34/75

Men’s Winner;Michael McCarten – 96/12/84

Least Putts; Darlene Baker – 27

Monday June 12th – Queen’s Birthday Stableford

A nine o”clock start had a number of players rugged up and some early light rain even had a few umbrellas out.  The rain soon cleared, the chill left the atmosphere and the final six holes were played in much warmer, sunnier conditions.  The day’s results were;

Men’s Winner; Michael McCarten (13) – 38 pts

Women’s Winner; Elaine Scanlon (33) – 37 pts

NTPs; 15th – Darlene Baker & 16th – Andrew Laing

Saturday June 10th – 4BBB Stroke

The round began on a clear, sunny afternoon.  The fairways had good cover but were still soft, shaded areas  carried heavy dew so there was little run and plenty of mud once the ball landed; relief to a handspan across the course, was given.  The field was boosted by a number of members of the Romsey Football/Netball club who were taking advantage of a Saturday without football or netball for a round of golf.  As the round progressed the weather improved and made for an excellent afternoon in the park.  The 4BBB Stroke format saw a number of pairs playing outstanding front nines and posting good scores but it consistency over the the final nine decided the day’s winner.  In the end it came down to just who could best handle the most difficult hole on the course, the 18th.  On a wonderful, early winter’s day the results were;

Winners; Mal Mottram/Anthony Lakey – 80/16/64, Dean Borg/Ethan Bray – 85/21/64, Sherif Abdel-Sayed – 85/19.5/65.5 & Darlene Baker/Bob McLennan – 84/17.5/66.5

NTPs; 15th – Mick Nicholls Jnr
