Wednesday June 26th – Monthly Medal

The June Medal began on a sunny (warm if you were out of the shade) morning.  There was still plenty of melting frost on the course with footprints and buggy wheel marks clearly showing where others in the field had been.  Some wobbled down the fairway to the green while others took a much more circuitous route to the cup. Only one player was table to take advantage of the good weather and, considering the difficulty of the course,  post an excellent score.  On a challenging morning the results were;

Winner; Kath Jekabsons – 104/29/75 from Lorraine Robb  -0 118/33/85.

Least Putts; Kath Jekabsons – 29.

Men’s Stableford; Bruce Robb (30) – 29 pts

Saturday June 22nd – 4BBB Stroke

After a cold, largely overcast week with rain on most days the course looked green but was heavy underfoot. The two dams had water in them so no more strolling out into the hazard to play the ball “as it lies”; plenty of golf balls for the youngsters to find later on.  With light drizzle falling for most of the morning players were met with very cold, wet conditions.  The 4BBB stroke format scores the best nett score on each hole and, in normal conditions, some excellent scores are recorded but the weather and the course made it very difficult; only two groups were able to return a below-par score.  On a very cold afternoon the results were;

Winners; Les Gaunt (7)/Pat Chisholm (13) – 69 from Mick Squire (5)/Mal Mottram (10) – 70

NTPs; 15th – Mal Mottram

Wednesday June 19th – Aggregate Stableford

As long as you were rugged up it was quite pleasant playing golf.  It was good to see a few green fee players out on the course. The course was in good condition but the balls didn’t roll very far hence good scores were difficult. Only one point separated the winners. On a chilly morning the results were;

Winners; Jenny Hartley (21)/Wendy Gosden (27) – 44 pts from Kath Jekabsons (28)/Lorraine Robb (33) – 43 pts.

Saturday June 15th – Stroke

Romsey Park had received over 75mm of rain during the previous ten days so a soft course became softer.  This, added to the cold air, found all golfers struggling to get consistent distance off the tee or with long second shots.  Once again approach shots had to be “spot on” or players risked “dropping and stopping” short of the green.  The steady northerly breeze cut out about half way through the round and  while the sun did come out for brief periods it was generally a very cold afternoon.  The conditions meant that  playing close to your handicap was a pretty good result.  One player was able to keep up his recent run of excellent form.  On a cold, early winter’s afternoon the results were;

Winner; Andrew Laing – 93/19/74 C/B Mitchell Atlas – 86/12/74 & Anthony Lakey – 96/21/75

NTPs; 1st – Mitchell Atlas, 15th – Anthony Lakey & 16th – John Moody

Thursday June 13th – Mabel Vearing Silver Salver – Avenel G. C.

The last Dalhousie tournament before a winter hiatus was held at Avenel in perfect late autumn conditions. A low hanging fog in the surrounding area made for a picturesque start to a cold but sunny day.  The atmosphere and ground was heavy to begin the day but as the sun came out and the dew dried off conditions became more conducive to scoring well in the Stableford event. A strong field, including the team of Beryl Cole, Wendy Gosden and Darlene Baker from Romsey, enjoyed their round of golf and appreciated the hospitality of the Avenel Golf Club members. Euroa were the team to take best advantage of the conditions securing their second win in recent times.  They were worthy winners of the Mabel Vearing Silver Salver.

Saturday June 8th – Stableford (G4aC)

Players found beautiful, clear skies and virtually no wind as they teed off in the club’s Stableford competition. There was still a heavy dew on many fairways and some greens making for shorter drives and tricky putts. Mind you, on a few greens, earlier players did leave a clearly marked line to the cup.  During the early holes there was a short spell of gentle breezes from the south followed by a burst of gusting NW winds but the wind died down after about the 7th hole.  One golfer had to declare his drive on the 401m, 8th a “Lost Ball”.  As the others in his group approached the green there was his ball about two metres from the cup, “Not Happy Jan!”.  The round was a “Golf 4 a Cause” day with the club raising $110.00 for cancer research.  On a beautiful, sunny, early winter’s afternoon the results were;

Winner; Andrew Laing (20) – 38 pts from Chris Lingard (1) – 37 pts, Les Gaunt (8) – 37 pts & Mal Mottram (10) – 35 pts

NTPs; 15th – John Moody, 16th – Chris Lingard.

Wed/Thurs June 5th/6th – Victorian Women’s Par 3 Championship – Kyabram G. C.

The Victorian Women’s Par 3 Championship has been played primarily at Kyabram Parkland Golf Club since 2006. This year 133 women headed to Kyabram to play in the Championship.

Parkland is a unique course comprising 18 par 3 holes with small sloping greens and is a fantastic test of your short game.
With two days of sunny, winter weather the challenge was set and players teed off in groups of 3 or 4. Over the week 68 Clubs from all parts of Victoria participated and Romsey GC was among them.
The Dalhousie District was well represented and players featured strongly in the tournament results.  Kathy from Woodend was nearest the pin on the final day and Jan from Trentham was the winner of the C Grade Net over the two days. Romsey’s Beryl Cole and Darlene Baker finished well both winning the Net on the second day in B and A Grade respectively, a fine achievement.
Jenny Hartley, Elaine Scanlon, Lorraine Robb and Wendy Gosden along with Beryl and Darlene enjoyed the two days of golf and thoroughly enjoyed the hospitality of those at Kyabram Parklands and Golf Australia.
The 2019 Championships finished with a play-off between two Victorian State team players Jess Pickwick and Steph Vogel, with Steph winning on the first play-off hole.

Monday June 3rd – DDGA Pennant Finals – Euroa G. C.

Dalhousie District Golf Association 2019 Women’s Pennant Finals

Steady rain was falling in Romsey as the RGC team headed to Euroa to take on Trentham in their final of the 2019 DDGA Pennant Season.  With all three divisions playing their finals a smooth start was important. Euroa was in top nick with good cover on the fairways and the usually high quality greens.  Recent rain had made the course a little soft so all players lost distance off the tee, approach shots had to be well judged or risked dropping and stopping well short of the green.  Defending a title is always difficult; this year the Romsey women took up that challenge losing only in Rd 1 to Lancefield on their way to a very successful final.  RGC results were; Darlene Baker -Sq, Jenny Hartley – W4/3, Beryl Cole – W7/5, Kath Jekabsons – W4/2 & Elaine Scanlon – W3/1

Overall Results were;

Division 1 – Seymour D Alexandra – 3.5/1.5

Division 2 – Marysville D Healesville – 3.5/1.5

Division 3 – Romsey D Trentham – 4.5/.5

2019 DDGA Division Three Handicap winners;

 Elaine Scanlon, Darlene Baker, Kath Jekabsons, Beryl Cole (C), Jenny Hartley & Lorraine Robb

Saturday June 1st – 4BBB Par

While par competitions can often deter some golfers, 4BBB Par is more attractive and a good sized field turned up to take on both the course and the very cold conditions.  With over 30mm of rain during the week the course was soft but there was excellent growth, especially on the fairways.  The cold afternoon saw players adopt different methods to keep warm and play fluently, one pair tried the “Bailey’s” method but this was not successful, others tried hand warmers or thick gloves.  The round was made more difficult by a flukey wind that shifted, quite suddenly, from the south to the west and back again causing numerous problems with drives and approach shots. Many pairs seemed set up for a good result when the wind intervened seeing balls move ball sideways, drop well short or fly long over the green.  On a  cold and windy afternoon the results were;

Winners; Scott Williams (13)/Chris vanDerVliet (26); +8 from Ron Walker (24)/John Freestone (20); +7

NTPs; 15th – Scott Williams

Wednesday May 29th – Monthly Medal

A great win to Jenny Hartley in May’s Monthly Medal . The round was played in very chilly weather with blustery winds changing from a strong northerly to a southerly late in the round. The bitter cold was tough to endure but luckily the rain held off for most of the round.  On a wet chilly day final results were;
Winner & May Medalist; Jenny Hartley from Darlene Baker  & Kath Jekabsons
