Sunday March 20th – Country Teams Fundraiser – Euroa G. C.

A perfect day for golf greeted those who travelled to the Euroa Golf Club for the DDGA Country Teams Fundraiser. The course was in near perfect condition and with the 4 Person Ambrose format scores were very low.
Romsey had two teams, John Freestone, Clive Mensforth, Bob McLennan and Scott Williams in the men’s comp, and Beryl Cole, Jenny Hartley, Wendy Gosden and Darlene Baker in the women’s.  Elaine Scanlon was stationed at the BBQ all day and players fed players as the passed the clubhouse.
The men’s team from Woodend had a scorching round and won the best scratch score of the day

The RGC Contingent

Saturday March 19th – March Medal, stroke & putts

The March Medal was held a week early to allow for next week’s Centenary Weekend of golf.  All mowers had struggled to keep up with the  excellent autumn growth and there were numerous areas on the fairways with very heavy clippings, add in the odd bare spot and “relief to a handspan fairway played:” was given.  The Medal always attracts a good field and groups, “shotgun Start”were spread across the course.  Clear skies, virtually no wind, good cover on the vast majority of the fairways, top surrounds and greens so some excellent scoring was expected.  Well, it proved to be a bit tougher than all expected.   Often players got off the tee well only to find they had run though the fairway and had to chip back  to get a shot at the green.  Others struggled to find their drives and were forced to head back to the tee.   After loosing two balls of the tee it took a top effort from the eventual winner  to claim the March Medal.  On a beautiful autumn day the results were;;

Thursday March 17th – Kilmore Bowl

Thursday 17th March A bowl team of Elaine Scanlon, Wendy Gosden and Beryl Cole played in the Kilmore bowl.
The day started off in light rain and was followed by  overcast conditions. The course was very wet in places and greens were wet and slippery. Jenny Hartley also played as an individual. We all enjoyed the event with Wendy having the best result of 30 points.

Winners; Marysville – 99 points.

Wednesday March 16th – Ambrose with Lancefield G. C.

After plenty of overnight rain the weather held off and the course was in great condition for a 3 person Ambrose event on the 12 Hole Old Course.   With Romsey hosting the Lancefield ladies we had 25 golfers on the course in a fun and friendly competition. Scoring was very good and fairly consistent with only ten shots separating the entire 8 teams.
Winners on the day were the combined team of
Jan Harver, Marilyn Mueller and Anne Robinson.

Saturday March 12th – Algie Mitchell Shield Qualifying – Stableford

The arrival of a few colder nights and some heavy dews saw the long billed corellas begin to move north; while there are still a few about the Park their numbers are greatly reduced.  Our motion activated sprinklers have limited the bird damage to the greens so repair work ahead of the centennial weekend events (March 25/26/27) and the women’s bowl (April 7) will be far quicker.  The qualifying round of the club’s oldest shield drew another good field.  Players teed off under clear skies with just a gentle breeze from the SW.  On a top day to out on the Park the results were;

Winner; Davey Kenney (140 – 40 pts

2nd; Mick Squire (4) – 36 pts

3rd;  Mick Nicholls Jnr 9130 – 35 pts

NTPs; 1st – Mitch Atlas, 15th & 16th – Mick Squire

The Quarter finals of the Algie Mitchell Shield will be;

  1. Davey Kenney 0) Vs 8. John Freestone (12)

3. Mick Nicholls Jnr (0) Vs  6. Steve Wilkins (4)

2. Mick Squire (0) Vs 7. Kev Dunn (22)

4. Scott Williams (6) Vs 5. Andrew Clement (0)

Thursday March 10 – Ruby McKenzie Salver – Woodend G. C.

The Woodend course was in very good condition for the Ruby McKenzie Salver. The fairways had softened up with the recent rain and had very little run and the greens were in top condition. The wind was testing at times and the slopes and undulations made for some interesting scoring. Jenny Coleman ( Marysville) had the best score of the day with 36 points and Romsey’s Wendy Gosden had the next equal best of 33.
Winner of the Salver; Marysville – with a total of 91 points

Runner’s up; Romsey – Wendy Gosden, Beryl Cole and Darlene Baker.

Jenny Hartley and Elaine Scanlon also represented Romsey on the day.
Darlene (30 points) was runner up to Sue Bryne on a countback in A Grade and Wendy was equal second in B Grade.  Those results earned Wendy 4 Player of the Year points and 1 point to Darlene.

Wednesday March 9th – Stableford (Rd 1 2022 Silver Spoon)

On a blustery day with wind swirling in all directions scoring was more than difficult. Rain over the weekend meant not as much of the recent summer run; players often leaving their ball short of the green. The greens however were true and consistent.
18 Hole Results

Saturday March 5th – 4B Aggregate Stableford

After receiving a good downpour over Friday night the course had freshened up, there was more water in the dams and the Park’s drains had cleared most surface water.  The softer fairways meant that players were allowed to “Mark, Lift, Clean & Replace” to a handspan on the fairway played.  A number of regulars were taking part in the 19th Relay For Life at Lancefield Park so numbers were slightly down on recent weeks.  Play got underway in overcast and steamy conditions, as the round progressed a slight mist settled which, over the final few holes turned, to steady drizzle.  The format, 4Ball Aggregate Stableford, saw some excellent individual performances but to win the day both players had to score close to, or better than, their handicaps.  In the end it came down to a count-back to decide the outcome.  On a day of changing conditions the results were.

Winners; Shannon Wright (8)/Brad Klaaysen (10) – 72pts C/B

2nd; Toby Clement (22)/Pat Chisholm (13)

3rd; Mal Mottram (6)/Steve Wilkins (18) – 71 pts

NTPs; 15th – Brad Klaaysen, 16th – Mal Mottram

Thursday March 3rd – Lancefield Women’s Tournament

Despite the very hot conditions at the Lancefield Women’s Open Tournament, the Romsey contingent of Beryl Cole, Elaine Scanlon, Jenny Hartley and Darlene Baker had a lovely day.  The Dalhousie Clubs are well and truly back into the swing of things with a field of 50 players.

Scratch Winner; Lisa Caines (Seymour)  88 C/B Cheryl Anderson (Kilmore).

Nett Winner; A Grade – Jenny Hartley (Romsey) – 73

Wednesday March 2nd – Doris Chambers Foursomes

Monday 28th Feb Jenny Hartley and Beryl Cole played in the Gisborne Bowl. Jenny scored a respectable 34pts..

Tuesday 1st March Lorraine Robb and Jan Harver represented Romsey at the Kyneton Irish Day. They enjoyed the day despite getting wet but left the trophies to others.

Wednesday 2nd March the comp at home was the club level of the Golf Australia Doris Chambers Foursomes. The winning pair from Romsey are Darlene Baker (17) and Jenny Hartley (19) with 29 points. They will progress to the state final later in the year.
